Last week I was on TopSail Island, just off the North Carolina coast, photographing pelicans and various shore birds. On my first morning going to the beach I mounted my Nikon AF-S 200-400mm f/4 VR on my NIkon D700 and supported it using a Wimberley II tripod head and Gitzo 1348 legs. I then attached a Wimberley flash bracket to the tripod head to support the SB-900 speedlight.

Unfortunately, I forgot to secure the speedlight to the flash bracket and when I was climbing the wooden stairs to get over the hill leading to the beach, the speedlight fell off of the bracket. It hit the wooden stairs with a loud bang and I was positive that it had shattered completely. I was surprised when I looked down and saw that it was still perfectly intact. Now the question was whether or not it would still work. All my fears were alleviated when I fired off my first test flash and found it to be functioning perfectly. This thing is built like a tank. It must’ve fallen a good seven or eight feet before hitting the first step and tumbling down several more. The SB-900 maybe pricey, but I think it’s well worth it.

A couple of weeks ago, we travelled to a location that I’ve always wanted to photograph . . . Yosemite. I must tell you, it did not disappoint. We stayed in a little B&B called “Yosemite Blue Butterfly Inn“. It’s located in El Portal, just a few minutes outside the west entrance of the park. The proprietors, Liz and Ron, are a wonderful couple that really go out of their way to make you feel at home. I highly recommend this B&B if you’re traveling without kids and want a nice, relaxing place to stay.

Our first full day there was on a Saturday. My wife and I decided to use that day to drive around (our rental car and the shuttle) and get a feel for the layout of the park. I wanted to know how long it took to get from certain locations to another. Later, this would help me get to where I wanted to be, when I wanted to be there. We’re always chasing that light you know.

Here is a sample set of the shots I brought back from Yosemite:

There is no shortage of opportunities for photographs in the park. When getting around, I’d recommend that you don’t just stick to using the shuttle. While convenient in the valley, the shuttle’s range will not take you to many of the park’s wonders. That will require a car and/or hiking. I spent a week there and only scratched the surface. I can already see many more trips there in the future.

Yesterday I spent the morning down at Lake Logan, in Hocking Hills Ohio, and the fog was extremely thick when I first arrived. The three other photographers that showed up shortly after me, didn’t hang around for long. As they left I heard things such as “this fog is impossible” and “I was hoping for a bright sunny morning”.

I, on the other hand, saw the fog and thought I might have an opportunity to create something magical, something with a mood. The first photo here with the three Egrets is from the period when the fog was still covering the lake. I was going to move around to the other side of the egrets to get some back-light shots, but the birds got spooked and flew off.

After that I proceeded to focus on the herons and swans. I even tried some abstract images when the reflection of the bare trees caught my attention. They reminded me of a charcoal drawing and I knew I would be trying a black and white treatment on them when I got home.

If your in the central Ohio area and have never been to Lake Logan, I highly recommend it. It’s a nice, peaceful place to spend a few hours relaxing.

As always, keep a safe distance when viewing wildlife.

OXBOW BEND
One mile east of Jackson Lake Junction. Slow-moving water provides habitat for fish such as suckers and trout, which become food for river otters, ospreys, bald eagles, American white pelicans and common mergansers. Look for swimming beavers and muskrats. Moose browse on abundant willows at the water’s edge. Elk occasionally graze in open aspen groves to the east.

TIMBERED ISLAND
A forested ridge southeast of Jenny Lake. Small bands of pronghorn antelope, the fastest land animal in the continential United States, forage on nearby sagebrush throughout the day. Elk leave the shade of Timbered Island at dawn and dusk to eat the grasses growing among the surrounding sagebrush.

MORMON ROW
East of Highway 26/89/191, one mile north of Moose Junction. Along Mormon Row and Antelope Flats Road, bison and pronghorn can be seen grazing in spring, summer and fall. Also watch for coyotes, Northern harriers, and American kestrels hunting mice, Uinta ground squirrels, and grasshoppers. Sage grouse, sage thrashers and sparrows also frequent the area.

SNAKE RIVER
Jackson Lake Dam south to Moose. Elk and bison graze in grassy meadows along the river. Bison also eat grasses in the sagebrush flats on the benches above the river. Bald eagles, ospreys and great blue herons build large stick nests within sight of the river. Beavers and moose eat willows that line the waterway.

CASCADE CANYON
West of Jenny Lake. Look for, but do not feed, golden-mantled ground squirrels at Inspiration Point. Pikas and yellow-bellied marmots live in scattered boulder fields. Mule deer and moose occasionally browse on shrubs growing at the mouth of the canyon. Listen for the numerous songbirds that nest in the canyon. Habituated animals such as pine marten and ground squirrels often beg for food. Feeding human food to animals increases dependency on unnatural food sources. And remember, animals may carry diseases such as rabies.

BLACKTAIL PONDS
Half-mile north of Moose on Highway 26/89/191. Old beaver ponds have filled in and now support grassy meadows where elk graze during the cooler parts of the day. Several kinds of ducks feed in the side channels of the Snake River. Moose browse on willows growing along the river.

Be a Responsible Wildlife Observer

Use binoculars, spotting scopes or long lenses for close views and photographs. Always maintain a safe distance of at least 300 feet from large animals such as bears, bison, moose and elk.

Never position yourself between an adult and its offspring. Females with young are especially defensive.

It is illegal to feed wildlife, including ground squirrels and birds. Feeding wild animals makes them dependent on people, and animals often bite the hand that feeds them.

Do not harass wildlife. Harassment is any human action that causes unusual behavior, or a change of behavior, in an animal. Repeated encounters with people can have negative, long-term impacts on wildlife, including increased levels of stress and the avoidance of essential feeding areas.

Nesting birds are easily disturbed. For wildlife, raising young is a private affair. If an adult bird on a nest flies off at your approach, or circles you or screams in alarm, you are too close to the nest. Unattended nestlings readily succumb to predation and exposure to heat, cold, and wet weather.

Allow other visitors a chance to enjoy the wildlife. If your actions cause an animal to flee, you have deprived other visitors of a viewing opportunity. Use an animal’s behavior as a guide to your actions.

Today’s Spotlight Photograph is “Sunrise Over Mirror Lake”. This photograph was created early on a chilly, late winter/early spring morning in Lake Placid New York. Back then I was shooting with a Nikon D100. While I really liked this camera, it did exhibit quite a bit of noise in the shadow areas of images. Because of that tendency, I had trouble creating a clean image of the scene below. Now, several years later, I’m shooting with a NIkon D700 and D300 and don’t need to worry all that much about noisy images.

Recently, with image processing software advancing to their current capabilities, I began to wonder if I could do anything with some of my old D100 images that I had previously written off. Below is one of my old D100 images that I ran through Adobe Lighroom 3 Beta and Adobe Photoshop CS4 last week-end. I think the results turned out pretty good.

Today’s Spotlight Photograph is “String Lake, Grand Tetons NP”. The natural lake is located at the outflow of Leigh Lake. A small wetland area is on the northwest side of the lake and is prime moose habitat. A short half mile long creek connects String Lake to Jenny Lake to the south. The lake can easily be accessed by vehicle and a number of trails commence from the String Lake trailhead parking area.

After spending a bit of time in Photoshop, I created the following composite image. For a brief moment I was able to convince a friend of mine that if you’re diligent in your search, you can find Komodo Dragons in the Grand Teton National Park. Ahh…good times. Needless to say, he wasn’t too happy with me.

Today’s Spotlight Photograph is “Foggy Autumn Morning on Lake Logan”. Last weekend I made my way down to the Hocking Hills region of Ohio. I know, what else would I be doing during the Fall color season here in Ohio? On my one hour drive down there from Columbus, I went through some pretty dense fog banks. It had me wondering if I’d even be able to shoot once I arrived.

When I got to within site of the Lake Logan, my fears became reality. I couldn’t see more than 30 feet out onto the lake. Not good. Not good at all. So I decided to drive to a spot where I knew I’d have the best opportunity for success. I set up my gear and I waited…and waited…and waited. Luckily, as the sun rose higher in the sky, it finally began to burn off some of the fog, but not all of it. Enough of the fog remained to give the scene a nice mood.

I’ve always wanted to photograph this iconic location. I’ve seen so many wonderful images of Mount Moran reflecting in the Snake River and I just wanted to see what I could come up with. However, on my first morning at Oxbow Bend, I was greeted with cloud cover that kept the mountains hidden. I waited and waited while other photographers packed up their gear and left. Finally, the clouds started to break, and I got off several frames before it closed in again.

I didn’t really think I had anything from that morning, but while I was processing that morning’s shoot in Adobe Lightroom, one of the images stood out.

Today’s Spotlight Photograph is “Autumn Aspens”. The photograph was created in the 3rd week of September in 2007. This is usually the time of peak fall color for the Grand Teton National Park. I came across this view in late afternoon on the way to the Snake River Overlook, after having spent the day up in Yellowstone. Actually, this is just one turnout east of the Oxbow Bend turnout. I really like it when the sun starts to backlight the Aspens when they’re in fall color.
